Anyone seen this awesome 1984 Sci-fi fantasy animated masterpiece? It's from Hayao Miyazaki and started studio Ghibli as he worked on a manga then on the film from 1982 till Jan 1984 as it was hailed as a masterpiece by Japanese critics and became one of the highest grossing movies that year.
It came here to the states in 1985 from New World Pictures in a heavily cut from 117 minutes to 87 minutes version entitled "Warriors of the Wind" which featured the voices of well known voice actors like Hal Smith, Linda Gary, Ginny Taylor, Jack Angel and Cam Clarke of Ninja Turtles fame and it p'oed Miyazaki so much that from now on no cuts should be made when US investors want his movies. But Warriors of the Wind introduced many 80's children such as myself to Hayao Miyazaki and was one of my first anime movie experiences as a kid as i actually saw it in one of L.A.'s theaters when my dad took me to see it as we lived in San Diego at the time before moving to Carlsbad (CA, not NM) and i was enthralled by the film. In fact after my 5th birthday i rented the film and had my parents tape it for me on a second VCR then i watch it often especially on HBO which i would watch whenever it came out and when i was 10 i bought a used copy from one of Carlsbad's local video stores as a second copy for i was obsessed with that movie and it was my favorite animated movie.
I didn't realize that the movie i grew up with was a butchery of a superior movie when i saw the uncut fansub tape at age 15 in my high school's anime club as i made myself a copy of the uncut version yet i still loved Warriors of the Wind, i even bought the manga and also the CD soundtracks at that age as well as a Wallscroll.
Thank god Disney has now a full uncut redubbed version with superb voice actors in it especially Patrick Stewart and has the subtitled version on DVD as well. Now i own the Blu-ray after selling my old 2005 DVD for cash and looks and sounds fantastic.
It predates Ferngully 9 years earlier and has the same themes including enviromentist issues, this movie is also an influence on James Cameron's Avatar as you can see why since Cameron is a fan of animated movies, anime, Ghibli, Euro-animation and adult animation as he also borrowed from Nausicaa for his new movie.
