Hexxus is an embodiment of pollution, as we know. If he existed in prehistorical times, what did he feed on? And, even more interesting, how did he appear at all?
The opening shows him emerging from a volcano. Yes, volcanoes are sources of pollution, and they can be far more dangerous for the environment than humans (a single eruption not only kills everything it reaches, it cools the atmosphere, and the fumes can hold on for long) but this flips the movie's pro-green moral upside down, if you look closely - it makes Hexxus something natural, more inherent to the planet than Ferngully itself. After all, Earth doesn't care about whatever's going on on its surface. Rainforests come and go, erosions and eruptions stay.
What do you think?

Lol we actually discussed something like this in the other hexxus thread. I've never really considered him pollution, to be honest. When magi lune referred to hexxus as the very spirit of destruction in the movie, I believed her. So, that's what I think he is hehe. Destructiiiooon. I always wished that such things could have been expanded on- but yeah the movie with its theme never would have done that.
But I always more or less assumed the same. That he was a necessary evil, for balance. Especially since some destructive natural forces pave way for new life

You guys have to remember, it's a kids movie. Kids don't stop and think about all this technical stuff, lol. They only care about, Ooo! A pretty fairy. Or look! Batty just crashed into another tree, how funny! Or yikes! Hexxus is scary, mommy. Which is why children are easy to market to, lol.
If animated musicals about singing bats and dancing fairies were totally accurate, then hey. That'd just be plain WEIRD. xD
