This too is about Hexxus. ;
Also, sorry about the rambling. I'm an earth science and natural disasters geek. ; the stuff fascinates me.

I'm honestly curious about what you guys think. Let's pretend, for a moment- that the sequel hadn't been made yet. Let's pretend it was still in the works, and you heard about hypothetical plots for it.

And let's say one of them involved Hexxus returning in some shape or form.

Think carefully about this, before you answer- What would you think? I know we all said stuff like this in the 'what would you do' thread about the sequel, but I want to bring it up again. Would having Hexxus return make for a better sequel? Would it be a good idea?


Or would it be a mistake?

Would it damage the first movie in any way if he got out?



Personally, I really don't know. I tried to sit through the ferngully sequel the other day, and was reminded of a lot of the ideas we brought up. I started to think some more about it.

I'm kinda flip-flopping, really. On one hand, I think it would be an interesting and logical plot device. Given that I consider Hexxus to be 'the spirit of destruction' Magi called him in the beginning of the movie. And since I consider him more than just simple pollution, I realize the planet earth itself has a very fine line between destruction and life when it comes to nature. (Which I think we can see in the movie some. The fairies, pixies, whatever you want to call them and Ferngully- represent all the good aspects of nature. Whereas Hexxus represents the darker sides, and also the darker part of human nature. We're part of nature too man. xD)

But for life and seeds and plants and flowers and all those pretty things, one has to remember earth is a fairly destructive entity as well. An extremely hot molten core, volcanoes, storms, natural pollution as well as human-induced, etc. And earth needs those kinds of things- I mean, for as incredibly violent and devastating as volcanic eruptions and fire and such is, these terrifying natural acts do help the natural order and pave way for life. (Which I imagine would be a very frustrating realization for Hexxus, lolol, if he's a spirit of destruction reveling in his abilities. D; that no matter what he does, life continues to flourish and sometimes even more so in the wake of such things.)

So, for that purpose..I think he would have to come back at some point- if he's destruction incarnate. If he were locked away powerless for quite some time, and was behind earth's destructive events- I'd imagine that would adversely effect the planet. That maybe it would seem a good idea to lock him away forever, and things would seem okay for a while...But eventually something terrible would happen. Or, if things were allowed to build up in his absence- if he was contained for too long without doing regular destructive things, the consequences would be worse. (As in how, earthquakes appear to be less dangerous if they're frequent, but if energy builds up and there's no earthquake for a while..it's a fairly good indication a massive, incredibly destructive one is building up.)


In those respects, I think it would be good for him to come back.


But then, on the other hand- it would be repetitive. Hexxus would resume the same goals, and the battle against him would...probably go somewhat similarly. Crysta, Zak, and the others present already know how best to deal with him- at least it would seem that way, and I doubt they'd let themselves be so nonchalant as to allow Hexxus to get anywhere near the level of power he was at. (even though they beat him so...easily. .__.)

It might even be too much, I think, to resume that struggle against Ferngully. Would he be as charismatic the second time around, doing the same things? I'm not sure. D; Even with Tim curry's voice. He could always...somehow end up in another place- maybe a city or something, an environment in which he could thrive. And cause problems there, and it could be a message to city dwellers to 'RECYCLE DARN YOOOUU, YER CITIES ARE DIRTY'... But then maybe that too seems too 'easy' or too expected of a plot device.


I don't really know. I can see reasons why it would be good for him to return, and reasons why not. So I'm kind of on the fence, myself. What about you guys, if you happened to survive my terrible rambling? XD

I don't think you are rambling at all. You bring up some very interesting points, Magi did say that Hexxus was basically the bad side of nature.
And in the film we are shown the two sides both good and the bad and even the inbetween as far as Zak and humans are concerned anyway.
I think trapping Hexxus was a good thing as far as he being the villain of the story goes and wanting reign destruction on Ferngully as well as the rest of the world which would eventually get rid of everything that was good.
But isn't it proven in nature that sometimes the bad and the good go together?
For example let's bring up the film the Lion King.
Near the end of the film we see the pridelands had lost all water and vegetation but during the fight scene a huge fire is started which later on brings back all the plant and animal life back to the land restoring it once again.
Which makes me wonder what would happen if Hexxus was trapped for all eternity, would the land began to die out along with the animals migrating for better food and water supply?
Perhaps but if he was also around it can be argued he would destory everything before this even happens.
And if he truely is supposed to be the destructive side of nature does that mean even though he is trapped forever in a tree that he can still control things like volcanoes and things to a small extent? I am not sure but I suppose maybe he could be.

Now as far as the sequel is concerned and whether Hexxus coming back would've been better for the movie or ruined it. I supposed it would depend on the way it was made. It could've been way better as he would've been a much stronger villian and the story may have even ended up with a completely better plot and storyline but it also could've been a total disaster. His animation may have completely changed like what happened to the others and he could've even had a terrible voice actor replacing his original voice ruining his character forever. Again it would really all depend and I guess there is no right or wrong answer with this one.
My hope though is that if he would've been in the second movie that the animation would've matched better to the first movie and all the same voice actors would play the characters and of course a better plot and storyline would've been created.

Mhmm, exactly. Good point about the humans too, I didn't even think about that- but you're right!

Oh yeah, I remember that in the lion king. You're right. And y'know, around volcanoes is the most fertile soil for growing things. Also, out here in Illinois- after every winter and every few months, they set fires (controlled of course) on the prairies and such around the area. They do it to, as you mentioned about the lion king movie- promote new growth. And during a trip to a prairie place once, I heard one of the guys say that if they didn't do the fires to get rid of the old growth, the new life wouldn't be able to flourish as much and might actually die under what winter already got rid of.

That's an interesting question about Hexxus in the tree too. =o Maybe he could. I also wonder if he could get out the same way he got out of the tree he was originally in. I wonder if Hexxus could revert back to that blob form and escape through cracks in the tree. Or, do we assume the tree they trapped him in at the end of the movie is likewise enchanted to seal him in?

You're right about that, no right or wrong answer- just opinion. And I share the same viewpoint as you. The sequel seemed so..rushed and constrained in budget, that I think you're absolutely right. If he had been the villain in that rather than those poachers, it probably would have ruined his character from the first movie. And nobody can do that character as much justice as Curry, in my opinion.

Mhmm, and I agree on you with that. I also wish they would have done that anyway with the sequel. D; I think with the older voice actors for batty and pips and crysta, animation more close to the original movie, annnd a better written plot as you said- that could have been a decent movie. Though I wish the villains would have still been...xD less bumbling.

There is so much about Hexxus that is unknown to the audience which I believe to be a good thing because there are so many theories people can come up with about him just as we have done right now.
And you do have a point the sequel seemed focused a lot on a particular budget and pressed for time which probably led it to the way it was and with the way the sequel turned out I am in a way glad that Zak and Hexxus were spared from being ruined forever by it.
But as you pointed out this based on opinion not right or wrong which is alright because everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I know when i was a very little kid it didn't bother me as much but it changed when I got older. And as I have already said I think a better storyline better plot original voice actors and close as possible to original animation would've made a better sequel even without Zak and Hexxus but without Hexxus there is still the issue of the villains which always irked me. It was like going from Carface in All Dogs Go To Heaven 1 to Carface in All Dogs Go To Heaven 2 not good at all. So I would've preferred better villains as well.

My answer in a word?

ABSOLUTELY!

First of all, I tried rewatching some of FernGully 2 on YouTube the other day, for the heck of it, and I just about threw up in my mouth! Yeah, it was that bad . . . I only wish I could say I was exaggerating, lol. Between the horrid animation, the dumbed-down plot, and the character voice actors not returning for their original roles, ugh! Let's just say it was a movie better left unmade.

But i'm getting off topic. Your question was about if we think Hexxus should have been in the sequel. I think; of course he should have! Not only did Tim Curry do an amazingly fantastic job with him in the first movie, but so did his animators and I just loved his evil personality. Everything about him was so charismatic in an "it feels so good to be bad" sort of fashion.

With that being said, I think his first role was far too short. And I think it'd be really great to see him again in another (more thought out) sequel to FernGully. Personally, I was gravely disappointed when I first learned Hexxus wasn't going to resume his role in the second movie.

I would love it if if they did a sequel but only if they brought the original voice actors back, so I would also like to see them bring Hexxus back but only if they had Tim Curry doing his voice, but even then I'm not for sure if bringing him back would be a good idea. I think the reason why he was such a memorable villain in the first place was because there hadn't been a villain like him in animation before, and if they keep bringing back he would get to be predictable.
